Home > Links
This is basically a link dump of stuff I've found interesting or helpful from around the web. Exists as much for my own personal reference as anything else.
Tech Stuff
- Simple html - Basic html explained. But really I'm adding it here because I love the aesthetic
- OpenSource - Blogs, guides and resources on using and developing open source software
- FreeCodeCamp - Lessons, resources and genuine certification on coding
- Code Academy - Another free coding site. I haven't checked it out yet, but might be worth a look.
- Geeksforgeeks - Tutorials on data science, web development, coding etc.
- Technical Writer HQ - Technical writing stuff, if that's your jam
- Hashnode - A little bit like medium (though not really) but exclusively for tech writing
- Network Chuck (YouTube) - The best teachers are those who are enthusiastic about their subjects. And Network Chuck is certainly that.
- MichaelMJD (YouTube) - The most relaxing content on the web.
Culture, Literature & History
- Reading Project - One of the most well put together sites on Neocitities. Book reviews mostly, but also check out the blog on the about page.
- TETW - Links to essays on various subjects.
- Terri Windling a.k.a. Myth & Moor - Notes on mythic arts, fiction and folklore
Website Hosting & Tools
- Neocities - Open source web hosting service and social network loosely based on Geocities (psst, It's where this site is hosted)
- Bearblog - A no-nonsense blogging platform
- Porkbun - Fairly priced domains
- Web Bloat Score - Measures the bloat of a page. Good for when you want to tut at WordPress sites.
Notetaking
A whole section just on taking notes? You betcha.
- Scott Scheper (YouTube) - Super geeky videos about creating and using an old-school analogue Zettelkasten (which he calls an "antinet").
- How to use zettelkasten as a programmer or developer (Youtube) - Prett self explanatory, I think.
- Zettelkasten (for creative writers) - The best post I've found on using Zettelkasten for creative writers
Personal Sites/Misc
- Herman - Blog of the creator of Bearblog
- Bob Doto - An anarcho-Marxist, folk-christian and Zettelkasten practitioner.
- NoHappyNonsense - Creator of the Weirdly Wordy & Ear Rat Magazine. The second coolest Mike on the web. Check out the microblog thing he made too.
- random ivysaur - Another Mike (well Michael) with a minimalist site and a distaste for certain aspects of the modern web.
- Nicky's Blog - A brutally honest online journal of sorts. Intrigued to see how it develops
- Derek Sivers - Pretty much the only person worth listening to when it comes to advice on marketing, business and entrepreneurship.
- Muris - Imaginative illustrations with a bit of photography and writing thrown in for good measure.
Resources for writers
- Ghostwriter - Simple, distraction free markdown editor.
- Editsaurus - My favourite open source grammar checker. Doesn't tell you what to write or provide any hard and fast rules. Instead, it just highlights potential mistakes.
- Grammark - Similar in some respects to Editsaurus. I often use the two in conjunction.
Internet Radio
- JClubBandstand - Two great jazz stations - Japanese and classic
- Jack House Radio - An eclectic mix of underground artists
- The River - My favourite-looking radio station. Plays pop from the 60s-90s
Weird and Wonderful
- Juggling Martial Arts - Surprisingly watchable
- Dan Bell - Videos on Dead Malls, abandoned buildings and dirty hotels. It's better than it sounds.
- Atrocity Guide - There's a lot of "creepy story" type channels on YouTube, but this is by and far the best one out there.
